VOLUME vs Ricoh Tours: Theta panoramas or a phone splat
RICOH360 Tours is Ricoh's own tour platform for its Theta 360 cameras: shoot panoramas with the camera via the app, let the service enhance and link them, and share a hosted panorama tour. VOLUME needs no camera; a phone walkthrough video becomes a free-movement Gaussian splat hosted at its own URL with a downloadable file. Ricoh's product is the natural choice if you own a Theta; VOLUME is the natural choice if you own a phone and nothing else.
How does each capture the space?
RICOH360 Tours is built around the Ricoh Theta family of consumer 360 cameras. The camera sits on a tripod; the companion app triggers a panorama at each spot. Ricoh's service applies automatic image enhancement and links the panoramas into a tour. It is a tightly integrated hardware-plus-software path: buy the camera, use the app, publish through the platform.
VOLUME uses the phone's standard camera app to record one continuous walkthrough video. There is no VOLUME app and no capture device. The video is reconstructed into a splat by a third-party pipeline.
Ricoh's capture is per-spot and fast per spot. VOLUME's capture is one walk and sensitive to pace and light.
What does the visitor get?
A Ricoh tour is a panorama tour: look around from each point, jump between points. Ricoh's enhancement tends to produce clean, bright, evenly exposed panoramas, which is a real advantage for interiors with mixed light. Some plans include floor-plan features and AI-assisted staging or editing; check their current feature list.
A VOLUME tour is a walkable scene: move continuously, with parallax. No enhancement is applied; the splat reproduces the light that was in the room. No floor plan, no staging, no editing layer.
Hosting, embedding, and ownership
RICOH360 Tours hosts the tour on Ricoh's platform under a subscription. You share by link or embed the viewer. The source panoramas are image files you have; the assembled tour lives with Ricoh. Plan tiers set tour counts and features; check their pricing page.
VOLUME hosts at volumevirtual.com with 12 months included on a single purchase or ongoing with a subscription. The tour is downloadable as a splat file, so it survives the end of the subscription on your own storage. Embedding is an iframe or WordPress shortcode; there is also an unbranded URL for MLS.
Cost shape
Ricoh: the camera (a one-time purchase in the hundreds of dollars, model dependent) plus a monthly subscription to the tour platform. Economical per tour if you shoot many and already own the camera.
VOLUME: no hardware. $79 per tour with 12 months hosting, or $99 a month for five tours, or $299 a month for a team with 20. First tour free, failed reconstructions never charged.
If you already own a Theta and shoot a tour a week, Ricoh's per-tour cost will be low. If you own no camera and shoot a tour a month, VOLUME's will be.
Which one?
Ricoh if you own or want a Theta, if even exposure across rooms matters more than free movement, or if you want the editing and staging features on their plans.
VOLUME if you want no hardware, free movement, a file you own, and a link you can paste anywhere.
For the general case of panoramas versus splats, Gaussian splats vs 360 photos vs video tours lays out what each format captures and where it breaks.
VOLUME is the camera-free path. One phone video of 60 seconds to 5 minutes becomes a Gaussian-splat tour at a public URL, with an unbranded link, an iframe embed, lead capture, per-tour analytics, and a downloadable file. No image enhancement is applied, so light the room before you walk. Pricing is $79 per tour or $99 a month for five; turnaround targets under an hour and is not guaranteed.
Questions people ask
- Does VOLUME enhance or brighten the footage?
- No. The splat is trained on the frames as recorded. Good light in the room is the only enhancement.
- Can I upload Theta 360 video to VOLUME?
- No. 360 video is equirectangular and the pipeline expects standard phone video.
