VOLUME vs Zillow 3D Home: free panoramas or a splat

Short answer

Zillow 3D Home is a free app that captures 360 panoramas on a phone or supported 360 camera and publishes them as a tour, with an optional interactive floor plan, on the Zillow listing. VOLUME turns a phone walkthrough video into a walkable Gaussian splat hosted on its own URL that you can embed anywhere and download. Zillow's is free and lives on Zillow; VOLUME's costs $79 per tour and lives wherever you put it.

VOLUME Virtual

How is each one captured?

Zillow 3D Home uses the Zillow 3D Home app. You stand in a spot and rotate the phone to capture a panorama, or connect a supported 360 camera (Ricoh Theta models have been the common choice) to capture each spot in one shot. Repeat per room and per vantage point. The app links the panoramas and can generate an interactive floor plan from the capture.

VOLUME uses the phone's own camera app. You record one continuous walkthrough video of 60 seconds to 5 minutes and upload it. The reconstruction builds a volumetric scene from the frames. No app, no rotating in place, no 360 camera.

The practical difference: panorama capture is point-by-point and tolerant of a steady hand; video capture is one walk and intolerant of speed and dark rooms.

What can the viewer do?

In a Zillow 3D Home tour the viewer looks around from each captured point and clicks to jump to the next one. With the floor plan, they can see where each point sits and jump from the plan. There is no free movement between points.

In a VOLUME tour the viewer moves continuously through the space, with real parallax. There is no floor plan and no dollhouse view.

If the question a buyer has is "what does the room look like from the doorway," both answer it. If the question is "how far is it from the kitchen island to the fridge," only a free-movement tour lets them walk it, and neither gives them a measurement.

Where does the tour live, and who controls it?

This is the structural difference that matters most.

A Zillow 3D Home tour is hosted by Zillow and displayed on the Zillow listing. It can be shared by link. Zillow controls the viewer, the hosting, the branding, and the terms, and the tour's reach is largely Zillow's audience. The cost is zero; the trade is that the content lives on the portal's property.

A VOLUME tour is hosted on volumevirtual.com at its own URL, with an unbranded variant for MLS, an iframe embed for your site, and a downloadable file. Hosting is 12 months on a single purchase or ongoing with a subscription, then $9 a month or self-host the file. You control where it appears. The trade is that it costs money.

What does each cost?

Zillow 3D Home is free for agents and has been since it launched; confirm current terms in the app and on Zillow's agent resources, since portal products change.

VOLUME is $79 for a single tour with 12 months hosting, $99 a month for five tours, or $299 a month for a team with 20 tours. The first tour is free. If reconstruction fails you are not charged.

Hardware: both work with a phone alone. Zillow's results are better with a 360 camera, which you would buy. VOLUME has no hardware path.

Which should an agent use?

Use Zillow 3D Home when the listing's audience is on Zillow, you want something free, and panoramas are enough. There is no reason not to; it costs nothing and sits on the listing where buyers already are.

Use VOLUME when you want a tour on your own site and in your own marketing, a walkable scene rather than panoramas, a file you keep, or when you are outside Zillow's markets. Canada, for example, is not a Zillow market in the way the US is.

They are not exclusive. A listing can have a Zillow 3D Home tour on Zillow and a VOLUME tour on the brokerage page and in the MLS virtual tour field. How to embed a 3D tour in an MLS listing covers the field logic.

What VOLUME does here

VOLUME is the paid, portable option here. It makes a Gaussian-splat tour from a phone video and gives you the URL, an unbranded URL, an iframe embed, and the file. It does not generate floor plans and has no relationship with any listing portal; the tour goes wherever you paste the link. Lead capture and per-tour analytics are included on every plan.

Questions people ask

Does Zillow show VOLUME tours?
If your MLS syndicates the unbranded virtual tour URL and Zillow renders that field for your listing, the link can appear as a virtual tour button. That is Zillow's decision per market, not VOLUME's.
Can I use a 360 camera with VOLUME?
No. VOLUME reconstructs from ordinary rectilinear phone video, not from equirectangular panoramas.

Try it on your next listing.

Your first tour is free, no card at signup. After that a single tour is $79. If a usable walkthrough can't be reconstructed, you're never charged.
